Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after President-elect Biden nominated Connecticut Education Commissioner Dr. Miguel Cardona to serve as Secretary of the Department of Education Secretary:

"President-elect Biden, in nominating Dr. Miguel Cardona as Secretary of Education, has chosen a champion of our children, who brings strong policy expertise and decades of experience serving at nearly every level of our education system.

"As a lifelong educator and as an ESL student himself, Secretary-designate Cardona profoundly understands the power of education to empower every child in our country to climb the ladders of opportunity. Throughout his career, he has earned the respect of educators, families and policymakers for his leadership to advance equity in schools, promote bilingual education and address achievement gaps in under-resourced communities. His track record of success during the coronavirus crisis makes him well-suited to lead President-elect Biden's mission to safely reopen our schools.

"Congressional Democrats look forward to working with Secretary-designate Cardona to promote an education system that ensures that every child can succeed."
